Diabetes can affect your eye in a number of ways. The most serious eye condition associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. This is where the network of blood vessels supplying the retina become blocked or leak, causing vision loss.
Eye examinations for diabetics should be carried annually. This will involve a digital photograph of the back of your eye using a fundus camera. This looks at the top surface of the retina and while it could indicate diabetic retinopathy, a lot of problems start deeper in the retina, so we recommend a diabetic eye examination with a Spectralis 4D scan which will also help detect other conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts which diabetics are at increased risk of.
